This exceptionally finely knotted Shirvan prayer rug dating from around 1900 to 1910 originates from the historic Shirvan district in the eastern Caucasus and with its approximate size of 200 × 100 cm represents a classic example of regional prayer rugs from the peak period of Caucasian weaving. The renowned boteh motif of Persian origin is arranged in a strict diagonal rhythm creating a remarkable sense of movement and depth while the dark brown to black ground enhances the brilliance of the colours. The palette includes light brown and madder red in various shades combined with medium and dark blue as well as moss yellow and pale yellow resulting in strong yet perfectly balanced contrasts. The rug is knotted on undyed sheep wool which adds to its warm and natural appearance. Particularly striking are the finely drawn boteh outlines and the richly decorated minor borders with red and blue crenellations and diagonal stripes while the main border on a dark ground displays floral and animal motifs rich in symbolic meaning and characteristic of the Shirvan region. This Shirvan is regarded as a highly refined example from the late classical period combining outstanding knotting technique with extraordinary clarity of design and thus qualifies as a true museum quality collectors piece.
