Sivas

An exceptionally expressive antique Sivas prayer rug from Anatolia with striking colour contrasts and a wonderfully graphic composition. The vivid red prayer niche rises dramatically against the pale yellow field, giving the rug a bold visual presence despite its relatively small format. Within the niche, delicate geometric floral and star motifs create rhythm and balance, softening the strong architectural form of the stepped design. The spontaneous irregularities of the village weaving add warmth and authenticity, giving the rug a lively handmade character that cannot be replicated in modern production. The borders display traditional Anatolian geometric ornamentation with diagonal motifs and symbolic elements in shades of black, cream, orange and red. The visible wear and soft patina create a beautifully aged surface with depth and atmosphere. Its naturally matured colours possess the warmth and subtle complexity associated with older vegetable dyed Anatolian weavings. Hand knotted in wool using traditional techniques, most likely during the first half of the 20th century.
