A decorative and finely patterned Tunis rug from the 1980s featuring a classical prayer niche design and an exceptionally harmonious colour palette. Hand knotted in Tunisia, this rug combines traditional North African ornamentation with a warm and highly characterful vintage appearance. The rich combination of deep raspberry red, black, ivory and characteristic grey green tones gives the piece an elegant yet distinctly oriental presence. Particularly striking is the stylised mihrab form within the central field, a feature commonly associated with traditional prayer rugs throughout North Africa and the wider Islamic world. Tunisian rugs often combine Berber influences with Ottoman and oriental decorative traditions, resulting in a highly distinctive visual language. The intricate floral motifs and geometric borders create a dense ornamental structure that gives the rug remarkable visual depth despite its compact size. The strong contrast between the glowing red central field and the darker surrounding areas adds further decorative intensity. Numerous tiny floral and symbolic motifs create an almost textile microcosm rich in detail. The rug remains in original condition and retains a beautifully full pile, which is not always common for pieces from this period. Age related stains and signs of use are present, therefore professional cleaning is recommended. The edges are slightly uneven but still intact and would ideally benefit from reinforcement over time. These authentic signs of age and use enhance the rug’s honest vintage character and underline its handmade origins. With its lively colours and visible craftsmanship, this piece works beautifully as an accent rug, wall hanging or decorative collector’s item in both modern and classic interiors. It combines North African weaving culture, traditional craftsmanship and timeless warmth in a particularly charming way.
