Ever since Shah Abbas the Great made Isfahan the capital of the Safavid Empire in the late 16th century, the carpets of Isfahan have been considered one of the most precious Persian knotted artefacts. This reputation is further enhanced by the Isfahan cork wool carpets, which were created under the patronage of the Pahlavi Shahs. On a pale, blue-coloured ground, this example features an iridescent medallion of intricate filigree, embodying the depth and delicacy of detail of the high Isfahan style. The carpet has deep pile in certain areas and irregular fringing. Floral and foliate forms from the royal tradition of Shah Abbas are scattered across the surrounding field, subtly conveyed by border strips with palmette repeats and flowing vine meanders. The pile is made of the finest Kurk neck wool, which is known for its exceptional quality.
