The Yalemeh tribal weavers lead a migratory pastoral existence ranging over a broad territory reaching from the north of the Fars province into the Bakthiari regions of Central Persia, their very highly regarded weavings showing the influence of both the Qashqa'i of Fars and the Bakthiari villagers, yet possessing a distinctive style and character of their own which represents one of the most accomplished nomad traditions of Persia carpet knotting. In this superb example of the type, a sequence of five medallion lozenges are linked in 'pole' formation up the vertical axis of the field, superimposed against a spontaneous arrangement of stylised vegetal motifs, all within an elegantly uncluttered border. The light, almost pastel colouring is an identifying feature of the most desirable Yalemeh category, and creates an evocative decorative impression in conjunction with the vigorous geometric expression of the design. The deeply lustrous Yalameh wool contributes much to this fine item's appeal.
