The 300 or so small rural weaving communities near the capital city of Hamadan (Ekbatan) enjoy a remarkable reputation as the source of what many consider to be the most enduring West Persian village rugs in terms of craftsmanship, materials and artistic integrity, all of which are consistently reflected in the elegantly tidy and balanced design of this superb textbook example. Three central medallions with bold Art Deco pendants take centre stage in a beautiful hexagonal open field surrounded by floral patterned corner pieces, within a carefully crafted but suitably understated border system. With its wonderfully vibrant palette of local dyes and exemplary Persian knotting, it is a rug of undeniable value and high democratic worth.
