Originally, kilim rugs go back to the nomadic people of the Middle East. They served and still serve the nomads not necessarily as a carpet, but rather as a blanket, saddle blanket, seat mat or wall decoration. It is believed that the first rugs in history, several hundred years before Christ, were similar in many ways to today's kilim rugs. Since the original kilims are woven by hand, they also possess a very important difference from knotted carpets. Knotting techniques probably evolved from weaving techniques. Nowadays, kilims mostly come from southern Iran or Afghanistan and Turkey.
