This remarkable Afshar Roukor Sofreh from southern Persia belongs to a rare category of nomadic flatweaves that have long transcended their original utilitarian purpose and are today appreciated as collectible textile artworks. Measuring 128 × 126 cm, the almost square format immediately gives the piece a strong visual identity. Traditionally, Sofreh textiles were woven by nomadic families for daily use, serving as coverings, presentation cloths or functional household pieces. Over time however, many evolved into highly expressive examples of tribal textile design. This example represents the weaving traditions of the Afshar tribes of southern Persia in particularly refined form. The composition is defined by an impressive dazzler pattern with rhythmic serrated geometry creating movement and optical energy across the entire surface. At its centre sits a bold lozenge motif acting as an anchor within a lively field of repeating tribal forms and zigzag structures. The result is both dynamic and balanced at the same time. The weaving itself demonstrates careful craftsmanship through fine kelim construction, crisp transitions and excellent geometric precision. The close details reveal beautifully controlled weaving tension and neatly executed finishing techniques associated with high quality nomadic production. Colour plays an essential role in the character of this Sofreh. Deep indigo blues combine with dusty rose, warm beige, ivory and muted natural shades to create a layered and sophisticated palette. Throughout the textile, natural vegetable dyes provide subtle variation, visual depth and an organic richness impossible to recreate artificially. Under changing light conditions, the colours reveal different moods and nuances. This natural irregularity is precisely what makes authentic nomadic textiles so desirable. As a decorative object, this Sofreh works beautifully both on the floor and mounted vertically as textile art. Its graphic impact can feel surprisingly contemporary, almost recalling modern abstract painting while remaining deeply rooted in Persian tribal culture. An attractive one of a kind piece and potentially a collector’s item that combines authenticity, craftsmanship and timeless visual strength.
