This exceptional example of a rare and highly esteemed type of nomadic Baluchi rug is a definitive work of the seldom-encountered Belouch tribe, who pasture their herds in an almost inaccessible mountain range in Afghanistan. The arrangement of small medallions which occupies the field is interspersed with stylised bird motifs and a helicopter motif, indicating the item was created during the Soviet-Afghan War, and thus belongs to the extremely collectable Baluchi ‘war rugs’ group, examples of which have provided a fertile area for ‘investment’ collecting within modest budget. A nomad prayer rug of outstanding merit and interest.
