Hamadan

The 300 or so small peasant weaving communities near the capital Hamadan enjoy a remarkable reputation as the source of what many consider to be the most enduring West Persian village rugs in terms of craftsmanship, materials and artistic integrity, consistently reflected in the elegantly tidy and balanced design of this superb textbook example. A central medallion with bold 'anchor' pendants stands at the centre of a beautiful hexagonal open field surrounded by floral-patterned corner pieces, within a carefully crafted but appropriately understated border system. With its wonderfully vibrant palette of local dyes and exemplary Persian knotting skills, it is a rug of undeniable value and high decorative worth.
