Knotted by semi-nomadic Kurdish weavers in the West Persian region between Hamadan and Feraghan, Goltogh rugs are distinguished by the powerful geometric medallion, radiant colours and highly stylised secondary ornamentation displayed to such striking effect in this notably accomplished specimen. 19th Century examples of the type are numbered among the most prized of all West Persian peasant rugs, with their most distinguished descendants emulating both their technical and aesthetic achievements.
