A prayer rug knotted by a weaver of the remote Baluch nomads from west Afghanistan. Its design and colouring may be traced back to some of the greatest Baluch prayer rugs from the 19th Century. The mihrab prayer field is in the square 'head-and-shoulders' composition, and is internally decorated with stylised vegetal motifs arranged to represent the Tree-of-Life. A delightful tribal prayer rug knotted in excellent local wool and with the restrained, sober colouring for which this type is much admired.
