This extremely beautiful nomadic rug represents a rare Baluch tradition which can be traced back to a few examples surviving from the 19th Century, attributable to both Afghanistan and East Persia. The superbly expressive field design depicts highly stylised warriors and mounted horsemen drawn with a primitive vigour in which compositional coherence remains consistently paramount. From early inscribed examples of this stylistic group, we know that the figures are intended to represent the Persian Shah and his close Court circle. Knotted here in a wonderful palette of old Baluch dye shades, in which rose, flame and deep indigo predominate, this magnificent nomadic item is also noteworthy for the exquisitely silky texture of its lustrous pile. For the connoisseur of rare tribal rugs.
