This hand-knotted runner originates from the Baluch region, home to a tribal people with a centuries-old weaving tradition in western Afghanistan. Typical of their work is the deep, almost mystical colour palette dominated by dark red, blue and black – clearly visible in this piece. The central medallion design is powerfully rhythmic and features the stylised trees of life and octagonal motifs characteristic of Baluch rugs. The pile is made from fine wool, with a foundation traditionally of goat hair or wool. The striking black-and-white border pattern frames the central field and adds depth to the composition. Baluch rugs like this one are typically woven on small horizontal looms and are admired for their robustness and archaic design language. This runner is ideal for narrow corridors or as an accent piece in both modern and traditional interiors.
