The region of Kundoz bordering the Oxus river in the north of Afghanistan is wellknown for its outstanding tribal Turkoman rugs in which the lineage of the ancient Oxus nomadic design repertoire is still easily detectable, making for an authentic, living tradition of tribal carpet art. This item strongly evokes the pervasive decorative character of the earliest known Ersari-Beshir rugs, an effect compounded by its beautifully-crafted pile of the finest handspun local lambswool, and the enlivening contribution of dye colours whose natural iridescence is a hallmark of the most desirable Kundoz works.
