A strikingly unusual example of nomadic knotting art from the Turkoman tribal regions of north Afghanistan, in the classic composition of the ensi cruciform rugs of the Central Asian Turkomans and intended for use as amuletic coverings for the
entrance to the nomadic tent, or yurt. The quartered field composition is intended to represent the four regions of heaven, while numerous secondary symbolic ornaments from the ancient Turkoman repertoire, including the kotshak 'Ram's Horn' motif, further testify to the sacred and auspicious intentions behind this famous design.
