Afghan

This hand-knotted Afghan rug captivates with its balanced, square shape and the strictly rhythmic arrangement of 35 Turkmen guls in the centre field - arranged in five rows of seven medallions each. The guls are finely outlined and worked in bright orange, ivory and black on deep Afghan red - a characteristic colour scheme of this region. The main field is bordered by several border frames that are richly decorated with smaller geometric motifs. This wealth of detail gives the rug both depth and an impressive graphic structure. The origin of this piece lies in northern Afghanistan, where traditional Tekke Turkmen patterns are further developed with precise craftsmanship.
