The carpets of Sarouk, knotted in the village of that name and in the regional capital of Sultanabad, represent the finest quality knotted in the Central Persian district of Arak, which has since at least the 19th Century been the origin for many of the most highly regarded and beautiful of all Persian carpets, including several uncontested masterpieces of the knotting art. This rare and superlative specimen of the definitive Sarouk style details a traditionally floral composition worked in mellow red colours against a saturated midnight blue field. Sarouks have always been especially admired for the wonderful quality of their pile wool, with the deep lustre and rich surface gloss demonstrated in this item exemplifying such sensuous textural appeal. Very few authentic Sarouk works are encountered today, and this represents the most traditional and sought-after craft and artistic achievement of the type.
