An exceptional antique Konakent Bird Kazak from the Caucasus region with striking geometric symbolism, powerful colours and remarkable authenticity. This carpet is among the finest Kazak examples within our collection and combines many of the characteristics that make early Caucasian weavings highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. Particularly impressive is the vivid sky to cobalt blue field, created with natural dyes and beautifully preserved over time. The wool has developed a remarkable abrash effect, creating subtle tonal variations within the blue that give the carpet depth, movement and an almost painterly quality only achievable through hand dyed wool and genuine age.
The central field is dominated by a large hexagonal medallion filled with the so called running dog motif, a traditional Caucasian geometric pattern with strong graphic impact. These repetitive angular forms create an almost modern visual clarity while remaining deeply rooted in the symbolic language of tribal weaving. Surrounding the main medallion are numerous smaller geometric and symbolic elements, including stars, stylised motifs and protective symbols that reinforce the archaic character of the piece.
The broad border is in perfect harmony with the main field and frames the composition with bold geometric ornamentation without overpowering the centre. This balance between border and field is one of the defining qualities of outstanding Kazak rugs. The vivid reds, blues, ivory tones and dark outlines create extraordinary visual tension and give the carpet a highly decorative presence suitable for both classical and contemporary interiors.
The pile remains remarkably well preserved for its age and still conveys the durable quality of these original hand knotted Caucasian rugs woven from hand spun natural wool. The upper and lower left corners have been professionally restored in the past and differ slightly in colour from the surrounding areas. Minor repairs are also present, which is entirely normal for authentic antique Caucasian rugs of this type and often reinforces their originality and historical integrity.
Konakent rugs are among the most desirable Caucasian weavings and are celebrated for their bold geometry, symbolic language and strong decorative impact. This example combines collector appeal with outstanding visual strength and works equally well as a collector’s piece or as a striking statement within a modern interior. A rare and highly characterful one of a kind piece.
