This fascinating and wholly delightful tribal artefact demonstrates how central to the everyday life of the Baluch nomads are their world-renowned knotting skills. Virtually every item of furniture in the traditional nomadic tent is created from the knotted pile and complementary weaving techniques and, as this finely-crafted pillow, or balisht, shows, the same care and attention is paid to the smallest, apparently least significant, test artefacts as to the major carpet creations of the tribe, the meticulous end-brocading on this example suggests it may have been made as a dowry work by a notably gifted girl weaver.
