With its vivaciously glowing colour and distinctive design approach, this is a charming specimen of the rugs knotted in the small town of Malayer, on the southern edges of the Hamadan region of western Persia. As with all Malayer works, the decorative influence of the nearby Sultanabad province is discernible in the slightly curvilinear style which is applied to certain ornaments, although the single-wefted structure is unmistakeably that of the Hamadan classification. The glossy lambswool of the pile and the dense, beautifully crafted weave which identify the best central Persian village work are essential attributes of this item's strong individual appeal.
