Tribal

This handwoven tribal kilim comes from Iran and embodies the quiet, archaic beauty of Persian flatweave in a contemporary form. Measuring 253 x 282 cm, it presents an almost square field of pure natural wool whose colouring is not dyed but drawn entirely from the natural shades of the fleece. Soft bands of pale ivory, silvery grey and deep charcoal layer horizontally across the surface, creating a living, almost painterly play of light and shadow that recalls drifting sand or layered stone. A pronounced dark horizontal panel anchors the composition and lends it depth. Into this restrained, monochrome structure the weaver has set fine polychrome accents, small orange and red dots running along the upper and lower borders and a luminous vertical stripe of orange, pink, blue and yellow at the centre, which reads almost like a deliberate signature. Such sparing flecks of colour are characteristic of the nomadic and village weaving traditions of Persia, where remnants of precious dyed wool were worked into small, playful markers. Technically this is a pure flatweave without pile, firm and evenly worked, its structure revealing both the hand of the workshop and the irregular character of the natural wool. The condition is as new, the weave strong and intact, the edges clean and the colours fresh, a piece free of any signs of age that nonetheless speaks the visual language of old tribal work.
