This exceptional Tehran rug presents itself as a masterpiece with a continuous geometric pattern on a blue ground that gives it an outstanding appearance. It epitomises classic beauty and timeless elegance in a traditional style closely associated with Tehran, the capital of Persia since the 18th century. The extremely refined field is decorated with the finest geometric shapes taken from the ornamental repertoire of Shah Abbas. There is no monumental medallion in the centre, but the richly patterned border creates a perfect balance with exquisitely drawn palmette, rosette and foliate borders. These are in the characteristic vibrant colours of Tehran. Examples of this type are extremely rare and were often directly commissioned by the royal Qajar family. A hand-picked selection was later produced under the patronage of the Pahlavi dynasty, in particular on the initiative of the last Persian Shah, Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. This magnificent Tehran carpet is a perfect example of the high aesthetic and craftsmanship standards that have earned it a reputation as a collector's item and art object of great value. It epitomises the outstanding achievements of Persian master workshops over the last hundred years.
