An item of classical and timeless beauty in the most traditional and famous medallion composition of Teheran, the capital city of Persia since the beginning of the Qajar dynasty in the 18th Century. An exquisitely refined field panel embellished with the most delicate forms of the Shah Abbas repertoire of ornament is centred by a monumental medallion of memorably graceful expression, this being flawlessly balanced by the scale of the richly patterned border area with its exquisitely drawn palmette, rosette and foliate repeat scheme, picked out in the lovely dyes which characterise the Teheran category. Examples of the type have always been extremely rare, with a few magnificent works being knotted around the turn-of-the-century to the direct order of the Qajar Royal family, and a select group of later Teheran specimens being knotted under the patronage of the Pahlavi dynasty, especially at the instigation of the last Persian Shah, Muhammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. This magnificent Teheran carpet perfectly exemplifies the exalted aesthetic and technical criteria which have earned the origin such collectable renown and high connoisseur value, and is representative of the most elevated Persian master workshop category which has applied over the past hundred years.
