Originally fully nomadic in lifestyle, the great Bakhtiari tribe of Persia achieved such political power and wealth over the centuries that, in the 19th Century, the dominant tribal group of the Haft Lang migrated from their native territories in Azerbaijan to a vast tract of mountainous yet fertile pasturage they had purchased in the Chahar Mahal district, to the west of Isfahan. Although the villages and hamlets of the Chahar Mahal had been making rugs for generations, it was the arrival of the Bakhtiari which instilled a vigour and barbaric splendour into the weavings of the region that has made such rugs amongst the most dramatically beautiful of all Persian village-knotted works. This particularly magnificent specimen of the authentic Bakhtiari style, with its monumental all over design, angular design approach, superbly rich dye palette and robust, impeccably-crafted pile of high-lustre Chahar Mahal mountain wool. A Bakhtiari of delightful individuality and memorably bold decorative impact.
