The magnificent Kurdish carpets of Bidjar have for long exemplified the most prestigious of all classic Persian village categories, which have gradually evolved into master workshop items of totally distinctive character and quite exceptional quality. The type is immediately recognisable from its dense, board-like handle, this resulting from a multiple-wefted foundation weave and the extreme density of the knotting, which is carried out by male Kurdish weavers of renowned skill. In this unusually large and notably accomplished example, the herati pattern that is a further identifying characteristic of the classification is expressed in meticulous detail and a wonderful palette of rich and traditional west Persian dye shades, while the beautiful border is of elegantly spacious composition and jewel-like colour; the expressive contrast between field and border provides one of the most satisfying pleasures of this superlative work. A large authentic Bidjar master carpet of the most traditional accomplishment, of outstanding quality and unique aesthetic merit.
