The city of Kirman, the most famous knotting centre in southern Persia, has been famous for its classic Persian carpets since the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries. Under the Kajar Shahs of the 19th century, inspired by master weavers such as Hossein Kirmani, the Kirman carpet experienced a new phase of exotic, floral splendour. These designs have since established themselves as one of the most popular and noble styles of Persian carpet art.
This exquisite example shows an extremely fine floral pattern in the motif and border. The delicate medallion is harmoniously centred in the rich red of the background, surrounded by elegant floral arrangements. The pastel shades, accentuated by sparse contrasting colours, create a subtle, almost magical colour composition. The naturally lustrous wool from the region around Kirman gives the rug an additional sensual dimension and makes it a true collector's item.
