This hand knotted Anatolian prayer rug originates from the Kars region in northeastern Turkey and can most likely be attributed to the highland weaving villages around Sarıkamış. Its design clearly reflects the influence of Caucasian Kazak pattern traditions, characteristic of the cultural borderlands between Anatolia and the South Caucasus. At the centre stands a clearly structured mihrab with stepped architectural contour rising above a subtly nuanced sky blue prayer field. The field is enriched with stylised star and rosette motifs together with small symbolic ornaments expressing protection and harmony. A strong red surround and a lively border of geometric floral rosettes give the rug striking visual presence and emphasise its authentic village character. The colour palette reflects the typical highland tones of the Kars region with rich red, cool blue, warm brown and ivory, complemented by bright accents of orange and yellow. The hand spun wool offers a pleasant handle and natural vitality in the pile with gentle abrash from traditionally dyed yarns. An authentic Anatolian village weaving with powerful symbolism and expressive character.
