<p><span>Luxurious Himalayan carpets of this technical and decorative calibre represent a tradition of great antiquity, very highly regarded today. The meditational character of the work's design, with the "empty space" approach in the field enclosed in an extremely muted "tone-in-tone" border of exquisite Tibetan ornaments, testifies to the monastic Buddhist heritage from which such works derive. Knotted by a highly skilled refugee Tibetan weaver from the Kingdom of Nepal using superbly lustrous, long-stapled mountain wool, and coloured with delightful restraint in the manner of the earliest known Tibetan weavings, this is a large and memorable example of this prestigious type.</span></p>
