The Lours tribe, scattered across the western territories of Persia, from Fars in the south to the Kurdish regions of the Northwest, boasts the oldest lineage among the purely Persian nomadic tribes. Their rich cultural legacy is evident in the magnificent Luristan bronzes dating back to the 10th Century. Renowned for their weaving prowess, the Lours have a heritage of rug making that predates any surviving examples of their craft.

Stylistically, as exemplified in this exquisite specimen, Luri kilim designs exhibit influences from the Qashqaí and other nomadic peoples of Fars, as well as the Kurdish styles found in the Hamadan and Bidjar regions. However, they maintain a distinct repertoire of minor ornaments, and the palette of Luri master dyers is unmistakably unique, characterized by rich, darker shades that lend warmth and depth to their works, greatly admired by connoisseurs.

Woven in the traditional and enduring structure that distinguishes the weavings of the tribe, which has also influenced the techniques of other tribal groups, notably the Kurds, this piece stands as a distinguished example of Luristan craftsmanship and decorative imagination. It upholds the classic tradition of this captivating and singular group.
