This extremely beautiful small nomadic rug represents a rare Baluch tradition that dates back to a few surviving examples from the 19th century, which can be attributed to both Afghanistan and Eastern Persia. The expressive field design shows highly stylised warriors and horsemen, drawn with a primitive vigour in which compositional coherence is always to the fore. From early inscribed examples of this style group, we know that the figures are intended to represent the Persian Shah and his close court circle. This magnificent nomadic piece is woven in a wonderful palette of ancient Baluch colours, in which pink, flame and deep indigo predominate, and is also distinguished by the exquisitely silky texture of its lustrous pile. For the connoisseur of rare tribal rugs.
