The small village of Nigde has been recognised for well over a century as one of the most individual and distinctive origins of the Anatolian peasant rug and, as this attractive specimen illustrates, the design approach of the Nigde weavers is an interpretation of the strongly geometric Caucasian style associated with the East Anatolian town and region of Kars. Soft, sun-washed colours, elegantly uncluttered draughtsmanship and a fleecy pile of the luxurious lambswool for which the Nigde herds are renowned all serve to distinguish this highly decorative example of its famous type.
