A magnificent large main carpet knotted by a nomadic family belonging to the ancient Ersari tribe, who have pastured their flocks over a vast territory extending along the borderlands between northern Afghanistan and Russian Turkestan, on each shore of the river Oxus, since at least the 18th Century. Such seldom-encountered items represent one of the last surviving traditions of authentic nomadic carpet making, and belong to the overall culture of the Turkoman people of Central Asia, the Ersari being one of the few migratory Turkoman tribes still in existence. With its imposing field arrangement of impressively heraldic and meticulously detailed Ersari gul medallions, the wonderfully soft tonality of its rust-red dyes and the velvet-textured quality of its locally sheared and handspun pile wool, this is a notably splendid specimen of a classic Ersari main carpet crafted in the most prestigious and rarely encountered Filpa quality, immensely appealing to the fastidious eye in its decorative effect, and of significant collectable interest.
