Of the ancient nomad tribes of Persia, the Afshar from the Kirman region in the south are, together with the Qashqa'i of Fars, regarded as the most traditionally accomplished of rug weavers. In this lovely specimen one of the most memorable of classic Afshar designs is expressed with understanding and flair. The angular turreted medallion composition represents a sheepskin stretched out to dry in the sun, and contains distinctive secondary ornamentation of diamond lozenges and stylised floral and foliate elements. The palette of rich, warm colours is characteristic of the best Afshari work, and gives the item much of its unique decorative appeal.
