Täbriz

Although major Tabriz carpets have survived from the 15th Century onwards, establishing this famous North West Persian city as one of the greatest of all Oriental rug origins, it was only during the 19th Century that brilliant Tabriz master-weavers such as Hajji Jalili developed an approach to prayer rug design which introduced the composition into the decorative repertoire of the city workshops. This beautiful items displays the inspired tradition of form and ornament associated with Hajji Jalili, in which the elegance of the mihrab arch, exquisite architectural and floral pattern elements and the wonderfully serene, delicately-orchestrated dye palette create an exotic interplay of effects which is wholly appropriate to the sacred nature of the design. The renowned knotting talents of the Tabriz weavers here give a high definition to each individual motif, contributing significantly to the memorable presence of this superb Persian prayer rug.
