The village of Lilian is situated in the southern part of the Hamadan knotting region of West Persia, close to the adjoining province of Arak (Sultanabad), and the richly floral design approach which distinguishes Lilian work reveals a pronounced Arak stylistic influence, deriving specifically from the rugs of Sarouk. The lovely colouring of Lilian items, beautifully reflected in this definitive example, with its predominantly roseate tonality, also owes much to the decorative traditions of Arak, while the knotting structure of the item indicates it belongs firmly within the Hamadan craft culture. An outstanding specimen of this well-known, although increasingly scarce, Persian village type.
