Mehraban, situated in the northern region of Hamadan Province in western Iran, is recognized for its distinct rugs that share design and color similarities with those from the city of Sarab and its surrounding areas in northwestern Persia. Historical accounts suggest a tribal migration from northwestern Persia to Mehraban in Hamadan Province, preserving their weaving traditions despite the geographical shift. It's worth noting that there is another city named Mehraban in the East Azerbaijan Province of northwestern Iran, where weavers follow the Heriz design style. Despite sharing a name, Mehraban rugs from Hamadan and East Azerbaijan have no design, technique, or coloration connections.

Antique Mehraban rugs from Hamadan have been prominent in the market since the last quarter of the nineteenth century. These rugs come in various sizes, including runners, gallery sizes, and smaller tribal weavings measuring six feet six inches by four feet six inches. The camel hair coloration in Mehraban runners closely mirrors that of Sarab runners, making it challenging to distinguish between the two.
