This fascinating prayer rug is the work of the Adreskani sub-tribe of the Baluch nomads from western Afghanistan. As with all the weavings of this ancient tribal people, it is knotted from the finest native wool throughout an interprets the traditional mihrab prayer field composition in wholly original and distinctive manner. The most intriguing feature of the composition is the highly stylised rendition of mosque architecture which appears in the upper part of the field: this is a unique decorative device used by very few other Baluch tribes, and rugs of such individual character are highly-regarded by collectors.
