Originating from the small town of Ardabil in the North Western Persian province of Azerbaijan, which has given its name to the most famous and valuable Persian Carpet in the world - The Ardabil Carpet - presently in the Victoria & Albert Museum London, which was discovered in the Shrine of Shah Tahmasp in Ardabil, this attractive item displays the powerful geometric style associated with works knotted in this region, where the cultural influence of the nearby Caucasus is highly prevalent. A crisp diamond medallion centres a field of stylised floral and vegetal forms, in a palette predominantly of reds and blues. The carpets of Ardabil are renowned for the tightness of their knotting and the clarity of their draughtsmanship, as this notably well-crafted example makes abundantly clear.
