The village district of Assadiabad in the famous Hamadan knotting region of West Persia has for long been renowned as the origin for some of the most consistently outstanding examples of this broad generic classification. The boldness and imaginative vitality of the design approach, the dramatic contrasts established between the light and intensely rich and dark shades which make up the palette, and the exceptional quality and evenness of the knotting are all identifying attributes of this prestigious origin, and of a singularly high level of achievement. Knotted in glossy, long-stapled local wool that is handspun in the village, and owing its glowing richness and diversity of colour to the secret arts of the Assadiabad dye-masters who adhere rigorously to the time honoured methods unique to the Kurdish territories of western Persia, this is a definitive specimen of the Assadiabad rug at its most accomplished and authentic level.
