This large scale Bakhtiari garden carpet from Bibibafft represents an outstanding example of classical Persian garden composition. Knotted in the Chahar Mahal region of central Persia, the traditional settlement area of the Bakhtiari tribes since the 19th century, the rug features a clearly structured field composed of numerous square compartments. Each compartment is individually designed and contains stylised representations of trees, blossoms, plants and symbolic natural elements. The deliberately reduced and slightly angular drawing is characteristic of the Bakhtiari weaving tradition and gives the carpet a powerful and almost archaic presence. With its exceptional size of over six by four metres, the design creates a strong spatial impact and defines large living or representative interiors. The colour palette is based on traditional natural dyes with deep reds, indigo, ivory, green and ochre, harmoniously balanced throughout. The even knotting, clear structure and balanced composition emphasise the high level of craftsmanship and the museum like quality of this remarkable collector’s piece.
